Spurred by the recent testing kit shortage, two final year students at Gulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI), Pakistan have developed an AI tool that helps diagnose coronavirus faster and with less human interaction. Their solution is said to detect the disease ‘with 92 per cent confidence’ locating the position, impact and severity of damage to the lungs, thereby reducing the level of engagement required by a radiologist. To facilitate public roll-out, its creators are calling on health facilities and Government to provide more support in the form of CT scans that will serve to further train the computers’ algorithm.
